Past Events

23rd - 25th January, 2009 StarDate South Island The South Island's largest annual Star Party, held in Staveley, Canterbury. This event is open to any interested people and is not restricted to members of astronomical organizations. Families, spouses and friends are welcome to attend.
2nd - 5th April, 2009 IYA 100 Hours of Astronomy 100 Hours of Astronomy is an International Year of Astronomy (IYA) Cornerstone Project, held simultaneously around the world. One of the goals of the 100 Hours of Astronomy event is to have as many people as possible look through a telescope for the first time. Events at our West Melton Observatory:
  • Thursday 2nd, Sidewalk Astronomy.
    7:30pm to 9:30pm
    NRL, 108 Victoria Street.
    Car parking available.
  • Friday 3rd, Public Open night, 7:30pm to late (no entry fee)
  • Saturday 4th, Public Open Day, 1:00pm to late (no entry fee)
    Come along and have a look at the observatory and our telescopes in daylight.
    Solar Observing - take a closer look at the sun through a solar telescope, yes you can see the surface of a star!
    Bring your own telescope along, let us help you learn to use it and how to maintain it. All are welcome to attend.

4th - 17th July, 2009 KidsFest A two-week long festival of events designed for children. The CAS Observatory will be open to the public every night for KidsFest, from 7:30pm to 9:00pm, weather permitting. Check the front page of the CAS website at 6:30pm on the night for confirmation.
18th - 21st September, 2009 Herbert Star Party A friendly, relaxed Star Party held at Camp Iona, Herbet, Otago; a gloriously dark-sky site 20 minutes from Oamaru. An event not to be missed. Open to any interested people.
  • Costs for the weekend are:
    • $11.00 for Friday night
    • $22.00 for Friday and Saturday, or
    • $25.00 for the full weekend.
    Payment can be made when you arrive.
  • The site offers very good bunk rooms, a spacious meeting room with lovely open fire, and excellent cooking facilities. Bring a warm sleeping bag.
